About our cause
A rural haven on the edge of London, Lambourne End Centre for Outdoor Learning invest in people and their potential. Nicknamed the “54 acre classroom”, our work uses adventure, farm and environmental activities to provide outdoor learning to people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities.
Around 12,500 people per year attend the Centre each year (almost 23,000 person days), particularly young people of whom 46% have a disadvantage, disability or mental health issue. We aim to inspire each individual to have fun learning, build confidence, raise self-esteem, experience a sense of achievement, improve communication and teamwork, conquer fears, develop new and existing skills as well as improving their physical and mental health and wellbeing.
Beneficiaries can achieve with us in various ways. It may involve scaling our 45ft climbing wall or abseiling back down it. It could be to navigate their way through 200m of underground tunnels or across the tricky low ropes course without plunging into the swampy water below. Perhaps they want to handle a restless goat or a rare breed of chicken they have never seen before. Their achievement might come in learning something new about nature and conservation by hunting for insects and bugs in our pond, woodlands and flora.
For many local young people, opportunities to access rural space are limited. The Centre is an important resource for these young people to get outside and gain otherwise inaccessible experiences. Here, they are able to push themselves in various ways whether it be to conquer fears such as heights or darkness, to develop a new skill such as teamwork and communication, to try something new like water sports or archery, to understand how to work with animals, to learn about nature and conservation or just to enhance friendships within the group.
Sometimes, LEC is just a safe haven away from the stresses and strains of everyday life where people come to feel safe, welcome and valued.
